ROWING
TROPHIES HOME AFTER 140 YEARS AWAY |
Three trophies have been returned to Derwent
rowing club after an absence of more than 140 years.
Anthony Lucas-Smith's great-great grandfather
won the cups during events in the mid 1860s and this week he donated
them to members of Derwent Rowing Club.
The university lecturer (pictured right) from
Milton Keynes travelled to the club's headquarters with his wife Ros
(back left), by the river Derwent in Darley Park, on Thursday to hand
them over.
Club members Fran Lane , Fiona Newbold and Richard
Williams were delighted to receive them.
Mr Lucas-Smith (63) said: "They were won
by George Goodwin, who was the son of William Goodwin, who had been
mayor of Derby in the 1840s.
"They have been passed down the generations
of our family and they ended up with me about five years ago.
"I have no interest in rowing and it just
crossed my mind earlier this year that they should be returned to the
club.
"I used the internet to track it down."
George Goodwin was a founder member of the club
in 1857.
